17th Daresbury Machine Evaluation Workshop (MEW17)

17th Machine Evaluation Workshop 2006

The forthcoming 2006 Machine Evaluation Workshop will be held on 5th and 6th December at the CCLRC Daresbury Laboratory as part of the EPSRC's Distributed Computing Support Programme. This Workshop is now established as a leading national event dedicated to distributed high performance scientific computing. The principle objective is to encourage close contact between the research communities from the Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Materials Programmes of EPSRC and the major vendors of workstations, software and peripherals.

You are invited to attend this year's workshop, which will have a format similar to that of previous years with about a dozen major vendors making 20-minute presentations on topics such as hardware, compilers, graphics, storage, networking etc. In past years the audience has been very appreciative of the technical content of these talks and we have encouraged the speakers nominated by the vendors to focus their presentations accordingly. Important components of the workshop include the availability of systems for benchmarking evaluation purposes, plus the exhibition itself. Vendors are providing Internet access to these systems prior to the event, and the availability of products on the day will help delegates evaluate the machines. We hope to make loaned systems available from the 4th December for the duration of the event.

In addition, during this year's event we are also going to be running 3 parallel informal Breakout Sessions over the two days. These are focussed on areas special interest with invited speakers to open the sessions and have been designed to encourage lively debates, as well as highlight developments and showcase performance features of tools.  The Breakout Sessions topical themes are:

Places on these breakout sessions are limited, so please indicate if you'd like to attend any of these discussions on your Registration Form.

The provisional programme assumes that we will start on the morning of the 5th December, and finish around 4pm on the 6th.  Online registration forms will be available shortly, we would be grateful if you could confirm your attendance before 24th November 2006. Please contact Shirley Miller on +44 (0)1925 603240, Damian Jones on +44 (0)1925 603805, or Nina Woodall +44 (0)1925 603717 (or email:

We look forward to hearing from you, and hopefully meeting up at the workshop.
